Mumbai: NYC & Company, New York City’s official, destination marketing organisation, led a tourism delegation to New Delhi and Mumbai in February to promote the City’s five boroughs – The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. The delegation was led by NYC & Company’s Arun Govada, Director, Tourism Development – Asia Pacific.

Accompanying him were tourism partners Broadway Inbound, Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises, Macy’s Herald Square, Madame Tussauds New York, One World Observatory and Seaport District NYC. The team conducted one-on-one meetings and workshops with travel trade partners and also hosted agents specialising in New York City from Ahmedabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Kochi, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata and Ludhiana for one-to-one interactions in Delhi and Mumbai with the NYC participating tourism partners. “We have seen a consistent growth of visitors from India to NYC and want to continue to spotlight the affordability, accessibility and diversity of neighbourhoods across the five boroughs,” said Makiko Matsuda Healy, NYC & Company’s MD, Tourism Market Development.

In 2020, New York City is celebrating several cultural milestones. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan will both commemorate their 150th anniversaries, while the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx will debut the first large-scale exhibition of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s engagement with nature, including new works created specifically for the exhibit. The new Apollo Performing Arts Center in Harlem will debut in Fall, 2020. Additional 2020 highlights include the opening of the observation deck Edge at Hudson Yards and the 50th anniversary of the New York City Marathon. 2019 is projected to be the tenth consecutive year of tourism growth for New York City. Visitation from India is projected to increase by around 5 percent in 2019 from the previous year with an expected 3,76,000 visitors.
