Mumbai: Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) is taking several initiatives to attract new traveller segments from India. Attracting MICE travellers from India is the top priority for MTPA in the current fiscal.

Arvind Bundhan, newly-appointed Director of MTPA, said that out of the total number of Indians travelling to Mauritius, 12 per cent visit for MICE activities. This helps promote Mauritius as more than a beach destination.

Mauritius welcomed 87,000 Indians in 2017 with a year-on-year increase of 11 per cent. A target of 120,000 Indian arrivals has been set by the end of 2020. Arvind stated that Indians on an average spend around USD 350 during their stay in Mauritius, with an average length of stay of six to seven nights.

He said that Mauritius is an affordable luxury destination and has hotels and convention halls which can host events and conferences with group size as big as 2,000 pax. Moreover, the Mauritius Film Promotion Authority is also working actively to attract potential film producers and directors from India by providing various incentive schemes.

Arvind said that MTPA’s four-city India roadshow held from August 30 to September 4 across New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Mumbai is one such initiative through which 27 suppliers from Mauritius interacted with over 500 travel trade members and familiarised with the latest destination offerings.

Vivek Anand, Country Manager – India, MTPA, said that apart from roadshows, MTPA India also organises workshops for travel agents to keep updated about the latest developments. He said that in the last four years, MTPA India has undertaken 24 educational workshops.
