New Delhi: With technology boosting the growth of online business, the Indian travel industry is on the brink of a major overhaul. But at the same time, holistic efforts are needed to reap the benefits of this tech-driven growth in travel trade sector.
This was the recurring narrative at the day-long conference on Incredible India 2.0 – the next trillion-dollar opportunity, organised by the Internet and Mobile Association of India in New Delhi on March 13. A galaxy of industry players led by Deep Kalra, Make My Trip, spoke on a variety of relevant subjects, including how to make use of the existing infrastructure, even as we try to enhance it.
Rajiv Varma, Director, The Royal Trains, called for steps to see that the online presence of top-notch products is increased. While listing some of the irritants of the industry like GST, he called for steps to increase the rail domestic traffic. Rashmi Chadha, Founder, Wovoyage, said, “Across the spectrum, be it budget or luxury class, more women are now travelling alone.”
“The Neemrana chain was using technology but without sacrificing the unique, individual touch,” said Sonavi Kaicker, chief executive officer, Neemrana Hotels. “North East and Madhya Pradesh were areas where the heritage-oriented chain will expand.” To increase the footfalls in important monuments in Delhi, the conference pitched for a combined online ticketing system for major attractions.
Aloke Singh, Open Sky Resorts, said, “We will increase the number of hotels from 15 to 40 by end of the year.” Meanwhile, Rishi Kumar Shukla, Director General, Madhya Pradesh Police, said that Safety and security issues will be handled with special efforts.
