Mumbai: Bhutan was awarded the Sustainable Destinations’ Earth Award at ITB Berlin 2018, informed the Tourism Council of Bhutan. This was Bhutan’s first award at the world’s leading travel trade show. The award was in recognition of Bhutan’s commitment to responsible tourism and preservation of nature. Bhutan’s approach to tourism development and management is also in line with its philosophy Gross National Happiness.

A jury representing 12 leading sustainable tourism organisations and networks selected Bhutan from among over 100 top sustainable tourism destinations. The award recognises and appreciates tourism destinations that work toward managing ‘over tourism’ and their commitment to sustainable tourism development and promotion. It also provides a platform to showcase ‘green destinations’ to the world.

“It is a testimony of the wise and visionary leadership of our Kings, the government’s commitment to protecting and preserving our environment, and the tourism industry’s effort in sustainable tourism. We thank the distinguished jury for recognising Bhutan’s leadership on the global stage in its commitment to combat climate change and protect and preserve the environment. We also thank ITB Berlin, Green Destinations, and Travelmole for organising the award event,” the Council said.
