DRMale: Maldives has won the prestigious title of the World’s Leading Dive Destination 2018 at the Grand Finale of The World Travel Awards recently held at Pátio da Galé in Lisbon, Portugal. Maldives once again secured the prestigious position after fierce competition with top tourist destinations such as Seychelles and Mauritius.
Established in 1993, World Travel Awards, also known as the ‘Oscars of the Travel Industry’, are considered as the most exclusive award ceremony in the travel and tourism industry which also serves as the best networking platform for the participants.
Today the Awards brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmarks. Hospitality leaders from across the globe were presented during the colourful ceremony held in recognition of the best travel destinations of 2018.
In addition to the Destination award, Maldives also won the following awards in five categories: World’s Leading Airport Resort 2018 – Hulhule Island Hotel, Maldives; World’s Leading Honeymoon Resort 2018 – Jumeirah Vittaveli, Maldives; World’s Leading Luxury Private Island Resort 2018 – Cheval Blanc Randheli, Maldives; World’s Leading Water Villa Resort 2018 – Sun Aqua Vilu Reef, Maldives and World’s Most Romantic Resort 2018 – Baros Maldives.
The island has won prestigious positions in various categories over the years. In 2017, over 1.3 million tourist arrivals were recorded in Maldives which is an increase of 8 per cent over the previous year. Maldives Tourism Visitor survey shows that over 65 per cent of these tourists visit Maldives for its underwater beauty.
